Sometimes when I ran out of idea on what to do with JS, I would either browse online, look through all the activity pages that I "Liked" on Facebook, or go through JS' art and craft materials to see what I can come up with. I found out that the pre-K books that I bought to cut out pictures for his previous English sessions have lots of pictures of animals. I'd thought of doing more spellings with him so I cut out pictures of animals that could fit (or roughly fit) on a popsicle stick. I planned to let him put the picture at one end and then the word on the other. However, we did not get to do the activity as JS started attending school and we had lesser time for other activities.
A few days ago, I thought of this activity to help strengthen his understanding about words and also why we say: A for apple, B for ball, C for cat and so on and so forth. I know that he does not know it because he would say things like: blue for bottle, or C for egg, etc... At the same time, we can do phonics with it too.
First, JS read the word given to him.
Then he had to look for the alphabets from an old book and cut them out to form the word.
I would then write the first letter of the word, which is "a" in this session, and he had to trace it using a glue stick. I made him do it several times.
Lastly, he arranged the picture of animals on the letter, according to the correct writing sequence.
